ADIC Management Console User’s Guide 109
LUN (Logical Unit Number)
A unique identifier used on a SCSI bus to distinguish between devices that share the same bus. SCSI is a
parallel interface that allows up to eight devices (target IDs) to be connected along a single cable. Each of
these eight devices has access to 16 unique address spaces (LUNs). A specified intersection of target ID
and target LUN can be construed as the Assigned LUN.
LVD (Low Voltage Differential)
A type of drive.
MAP (Maintenance Action Plan)
A CLI routine that guide a user through troubleshooting system or component error.
MIB (Management Information Base)
A database of objects that can be monitored by SNMP or other database management system.
NDMP
Network Data Management Protocol
Partition
An abstraction of an underlying physical library that may present a different personality, capacity, or both to
a host. It is a representation of real physical elements, combined to create a grouping that is different from
the physical library.
Policy
A rule within the AMC expert notification system that allows AMC to alert persons specified by the
administrator that specified SAN error conditions have been met.
Portal
A collection of storage area networking devices that represent a particular user’s universe. The SAN
administrator’s default portal is the entire set of SAN-capable appliances and associated storage on the
subnet to which AMC has access. This is called the master portal. Other users are granted privileges to
subsets of the master portal by the SAN administrator.
POST (Power On Self Test)
A diagnostic testing sequence run by the SNC or MCB BIOS (basic input/output system) when the power is
initially turned on.
Point to Point
A Fibre Channel topology.
RAS (Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability)
Three key attributes of computing system design.
Realization
For Pathlight VX, writing disk information to physical tape media.
Remote server
An instance of the AMC server that is distinct from the server embedded in the MCB or the Pathlight VX.
RMU (Remote Management Unit)
A library feature that allows a user to monitor library operations remotely. Not all libraries have an RMU.
SAN (Storage Area Network)
A SAN is a dedicated, high-performance network whose primary purpose is the transfer of data along FC
or high-speed Ethernet connections between servers, interconnect devices, and storage peripherals.
SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)
A parallel interface standard.
SCSI Channel menu
An AMC menu that allows the user to configure the SCSI channel parameters for an SNC. It appears when
a SCSI Channel is right-clicked from either the navigation panel or the graphical panel.
